Yom Kippur

As the Jewish holy day of Yom
Kippur approaches, it brings with it a time of introspection and the
remembrance of relatives who are no longer alive. 
The cemetery restoration pays
tribute to Jewish ancestors who are buried in the Tarnow Jewish cemetery and
ensures that their graves are protected and accessible.  A donation at
this time of year is especially meaningful as an act of remembrance and
support. Adam and I extend to everyone our wishes that they be inscribed in the
book of life.

Steve Israeler in Tarnów

Mr Steve (Stefan) Israeler came to visit Tarnów on July 04. His family comes from Wadowice and Kęty, later they lived in Kraków. Steve came to Tarnów during World War II as a young boy. He worked as a carter, a carriage driver, when he was about 12 years old. He drove a horse and carriage for the German SS Chief Rommelman and Grunov from the Gestapo. Both extremely cruel men.

We went to Warzywna str., where he lived before the Ghetto in Tarnów, then we saw Jewish Cemetery and PCK str. (it was Zyblikiewicza str. until 70.), where he spent some time also.

Mr Steve was part of one of the last Jewish group left for clean up of the Tarnów ghetto. He said: „I was last Jew in Tarnów”. He lost his entire family – both in Tarnow and in other sites. It was very moving and informative meeting.

First Remembrance March from Magdeburski Square to Cemetery

It was first Remembrance March like that. From former Magdeburski Square (Umschlagplatz) to Jewish Cemetery in Tarnów. There was about 50 guests, who commemorated by this special event all of Jews, murderd in Jewish Cemetery in Tarnów, in city and in Buczyna forrest (in Zbylitowska Góra) – in time of II WW.

8.03.2017 – Signing of the Agreement

The official signing of the Agreement on the Renovation of the Jewish
Cemetery in Tarnow was on March 8 at 9.00 in the Tarnow’s
historical Town Hall. The event is organised by the representative of
the funding body, dr hab. Stanislaw Sorys, Deputy Marshal of the
Malopolskie Province. 
We had the pleasure to invite to this event Mr President Roman Ciepiela, Mr Andrzej Szpunar, the director of the Museum in Tarnów and our guests, i.a.: Ms. Rela Bogucka, Ms Carolyn Gammon with her friend Kathrine, Tomasz Grebner and others.

Jak co roku we Wszystkich Świętych i w Dzień Zaduszny otwieramy bramę
cmentarza żydowskiego, aby można było wejść
i zostawić świeczkę na opuszczonych żydowskich grobach. Dzisiaj, po dwóch dniach, na wielu grobach było jeszcze światło. Każdego roku więcej.
             
As every year, on the Day of Saints and Day of Souls we’re opening gate of the Jewish cemetery. People can enter and leave a candle on abandoned
Jewish graves. Today, after two days, on graves still was many lights. Every year more and more.

Dan Oren founded a renovation

Professor Dan Oren from Connecticut (USA) with his wife Jeannet and several
family members visited Tarnow cemetery in July this year. Unexpectedly they
founded a fallen piece of tombstone with the name Josef Taubenschlag.
They founded out that Josef Taubenschlag was uncle of prof. Dan Oren and
a distant relative of his wife. Family decided to outsource the
renovation of the monument and in October monument with our stood
renovated with help of Committee for the Protection of Jewish Tarnów. Please see some photos before and after renovation.

wraz z żoną Jeannet i kilku członkami rodziny odwiedzili tarnowski cmentarz w
lipcu tego roku. Niespodziewanie trafili na zwalony fragment nagrobka z
nazwiskiem Josef Taubenschlag. Okazało się że to wujek Dana Orena i daleki
krewny jego małżonki. Postanowili zlecić remont pomnika, i oto w połowie
października pomnik z pomocą naszego Komitetu stanął odnowiony.

Jakub Owide gravestone

W 2015 r. rodzina Jakuba Owide, zmarłego w Tarnowie w 1934 r., zwróciła się do
Komitetu Opieki nad Zabytkami Kultury Żydowskiej w Tarnowie z prośbą o pomoc w
odnalezieniu jego nagrobka na tarnowskim cmentarzu. Ku naszej radości udało się go odnaleźć. W 2016 r. Komitet Opieki nad Zabytkami Kultury Żydowskiej w
Tarnowie pomógł w przeprowadzeniu renowacji nagrobka. Oto zdjęcia sprzed i po remoncie.
In 2015 the family of Jakub Owide died in Tarnow in 1934 asked the Committee
for the Protection of Jewish Heritage in Tarnow for help in finding his
gravestone in the Tarnów cemetery. To our delight we found the gravestone. In
2016 Committee for the Protection of Jewish Heritage in Tarnow helped repair
the tombstone. Below you can find photos before

News in our project „Jaśliska”. Jewish Committee from Tarnów with Pinchas Pomp, rabbi from Dynów and Jacob Schwarz rabbi from NY trying to enclose an area of Jewish cemetery in Jaśliska (Podkarpackie voivodeship). September, 8. was stakeholder meeting in Jaśliska with mayor Adam Dańczak. We hope, that after all perturbations the cemetery will have a fence.
